Hi
Guys, welcome to the all-new Bingelder.nl
Hobby - Astronomy.
Sternwarte Aachen 20
september 2014
On 20 september 2014 a delegation
of Sterrenwacht Limburg
visited the Aachen Observatory (Sternwarte Aachen). Here
is my story, and some photographs:

Chris busies himself taking some shots before the presentation begins.
The solar scope, neatly built
into a wooden box that fits onto the main telescope for tracking.
Presentation. As you can see they
keep it very up-to-date; here's a fresh image from Rosetta of 67p/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
A real meteorite. Although it's
small, it's over 4 billion years old.
Neat.
After the presentation we visited
the dome with the Telescope.
It's big compared to the Sterrenwacht, and the Telescope is something
else. Wow.
Same for the dome, by the way. All wood with sliding doors, not lifting blinds. Beautiful.
Our host is explaining how the tracking
mechanism works.
By turning the crank (top right)
a weight that is hidden in and under the pedestal is lifted so it pulls down on a clock mechanism, that in turn
helps the Telescope to track the night sky.
When I said clock mechanism, that
wasn't a metaphor.
On the other side of the
pedestal, at the bottom, you can see the bicycle chain that lifts and
pulls the weight for the mechanism.
The Telescope comes with a nice
old box of peripherals like lenses and stuff.
This is one of the best features of Sternwarte Aachen: it all takes you
back to about a century ago. The wooden dome, the cabinets inside, the
mechanics of the Telescope; it all looks, feels (and smells!!) like
yesteryear. Steampunk avant-la-lettre, if you know what I mean.
See?
Know what I mean?
Our Carlo looking for that UFO on
the horizon.
And Frans has a go as well.
There is no wrong angle to this
thing, all photographs look cool and impressive. To me they do.
A look at the baffles inside the
Telescope.
The dome in all its splendor.
Sterrenwacht.nl meets and greets
sternwarte-aachen.de!
We'll be back...
And of course: they are invited to visit us!
